NIE
The NIE number is a fiscal identification number specifically for non Spanish nationals. Certain Police stations throughout Spain issue the NIEs. It is issued as an A4 sheet of paper, rather than credit card sized. In the past NIEs were issued with a 3 month expiry date. Now there is no expiry date on newly issued NIEs. There are a variety of reasons why a NIE number may be required, such as; If you have lost your certificate and do not have a copy, you can obtain another in person at a police station. Alternatively, we can obtain one on your behalf. The NIE number will be the same as on your original certificate.
The present system of NIEs was introduced at the end of 2004. You may not have a NIE number if you bought a property prior to this date. You will need to obtain a NIE prior to selling your property. Our conveyancing service assists clients in these circumstances. Read more here. We also offer a standalone service for obtaining NIEs on your behalf. However, if you have been filing non resident tax returns as a property owner, you may have been allocated a number without knowing it. It is possible for children under the age of 18 to be issued with a NIE number. There is usually additional documentation required, such as a birth certificate with a certified translation. Regions often apply different rules for child NIE applications, and will wish to know the reason for the application. Appointments to obtain NIEs must be booked in advance. A 3 month wait for an appointment is possible in certain areas of Spain. Areas with a large number of foreign nationals are particularly affected; such as Alicante, Murcia, Málaga, the Balearics and the Canary Islands. GB Abogados are able to obtain NIE certificates on behalf of clients. This means that no travel to Spain is necessary. We arrange NIE appointments in several locations in Spain.
